How do you get to the top of the Search Engines?
Google tries to see what are the most relevant and popular websites for a key phrase. Your position in the search engine for a phrase is determined by two main factors:

On Page Optimisation – 25% is determined by the text on your website and how your website is organised.

Off Page Optimisation – 75% is determined by the inbound links to your website. Your ranking position in the search engines will depend on the number of high quality relevant inbound links to your site from other websites.

The links will be most effective if:

  • they contain the same words as your key phrase
  • The site you are linking from has a high page ranking (developed through quality inbound links to it).
  • The page or site has multiple references to your key phrase.

Other points to remember:

  • Some key phrases are more competitive than others. If the sites you are competing against (the ones which currently sit at the top of Google) are not “well optimised” it will require less effort to compete against them.
  • The amount of work required to achieve a good ranking position for a key phrase is directly proportionate to the competitiveness of that phrase.
  • It may be more cost effective to compete for a less competitive phrase.
  • It is necessary to build 100s if not 1000s of links to get to the first page of Google.
  • Poor quality links can have a detrimental effect.
  • Search engines like Google will judge your websites importance and relevance on factors like how many pages it has and how often the site is updated. Therefore a Content Management System is always a good idea to make this easier.
