Keyword selection:
The first step of SEO is choosing your keywords.
We have explained in ´How to get to the top´ what the factors are that decide if you are listed higher up in the search engines. Now the first step in using that knowledge is in choosing which keyphrases you should select for your search engine optimisation (SEO).
What are the keyphrases that are people searching with?
You want to rank highly in search engines for keywords that people actually use. If no one is searching for your targeted keywords, it will not matter how high the site is ranked in the search engines. Although you may use your intuition and knowledge to guess what most people are searching for , Bite Digital can tell you exactly which keyphrases are being used and how many people are searching with them every day.
Competition: Bigger is not always better
The keyphrase with the largest number of searches is not necessarily the best focus for your company. Some key phrases are harder to get to the top of Google for than others. If the sites you are competing against (the ones which currently sit at the top of Google) are not “well optimised” it will require less effort to compete against them. i.e. if all the sites on the first page for a selected phrase don´t have many high quality inbound and relevant links to them then it will be a straightforward case of good SEO in order to get your site listed.
However if the keyword phrase is one that is used the most, it is likely that many more websites have that phrase on their web pages and that many more of your competitors have optimised their sites for it. It will require more high quality inbound and relevant links. With enough time and money Bite Digital can get you to the top for any phrase. If your SEO budget is limited, it may be better to select the ´low hanging fruit´ i.e. keyphrase´s that are less competitive but still generate enough relevant visitors to your site.
Examples
Example´s of the difference between highly competitive and less competitive key phrases:
Travel:
Competitve: ´luxury holidays´
Less competitive: ´luxury honeymoon destinations´
Pet-shops:
Competitve: ´parrot cage´
Less competitive: ´large parrot cage´
