Google Remains Strong in China

Date: 15.07.2010

Last week it was reported that Google China is to have its annual license renewed. This is good news for Google who recently campaigned against censorship by the Chinese government by rerouting its Chinese searches through Hong Kong-www.google.com.hk.

The leading search engine in China is Baidu, which was founded in 1999. “Baidu was developed as a Chinese version of Google for local users” said Forbes columnist Rebecca Fielding. She went on to add that Baidu’s “search technology was considered superior to Google’s in the Mandarin language”. At present Baidu holds 64% of the search engine market compared to Google who holds 34%. By moving its Chinese search engine Google has inadvertently sent Baidu’s stock price soaring to almost double since the beginning of the year.
