Google Buys Metaweb

Google announced last week that it has bought San Francisco based Metaweb Technology for an undisclosed sum. Metaweb is renowned for its vast database known as Freebase.

Google's aim is that by acquiring the Freebase data system that it will allow them to offer a more accurate search result with greater efficiency. The Freebase has a sprawling database consisting of more than 12 million items of interest including for instance facts about celebrities, companies and TV shows. Metaweb then takes all this relevant information and links up all these connections.

Jack Menzel, Director of Product Management at Google explains that “The web isn't merely words. It's information about things in the real world and understanding real world entities can help deliver relevant information more quickly”. Google have also recently purchased ITA, a software company which gathers data relating to all aspects of the travel industry.
