How do you get to the top of the Search Engines?

Google tries to see what are the most relevant and popular websites for a key phrase. Your position in the search engine for a phrase is determined by two main factors:

On Page Optimisation – 25% is determined by the text on your website and how your website is organised.

Off Page Optimisation – 75% is determined by the inbound links to your website. Your ranking position in the search engines will depend on the number of high quality relevant inbound links to your site from other websites.

Our Search Engine Optimisation Manchester and London teams are experts in both of these areas.

The links will be most effective if:

  • they contain the same words as your key phrase
  • The site you are linking from has a high page ranking (developed through quality inbound links to it).
  • The page or site has multiple references to your key phrase.

Other points to remember:

  • Some key phrases are more competitive than others. If the sites you are competing against (the ones which currently sit at the top of Google) are not “well optimised” it will require less effort to compete against them.
  • The amount of work required to achieve a good ranking position for a key phrase is directly proportionate to the competitiveness of that phrase.
  • It may be more cost effective to compete for a less competitive phrase.
  • It is necessary to build 100s if not 1000s of links to get to the first page of Google.
  • Poor quality links can have a detrimental effect.
  • Search engines like Google will judge your websites importance and relevance on factors like how many pages it has and how often the site is updated. Therefore a Content Management System is always a good idea to make this easier.

How can Bite Digital help?
Bite Digital offer a comprehensive Search Engine Optimisation service which over time builds up a high volume of relevant high quality inbound links to your website. Google will then consider you to be one of the leading sources of information for your key phrase and will position your website higher.

Keyword selection:
The first step of SEO is choosing your keywords.
We have explained in 'How to get to the top' what the factors are that decide if you are listed higher up in the search engines. Now the first step in using that knowledge is in choosing which keyphrases you should select for your search engine optimisation (SEO).

What are the keyphrases that are people searching with?

You want to rank highly in search engines for keywords that people actually use. If no one is searching for your targeted keywords, it will not matter how high the site is ranked in the search engines. Although you may use your intuition and knowledge to guess what most people are searching for , Bite Digital can tell you exactly which keyphrases are being used and how many people are searching with them every day.

Competition: Bigger is not always better

The keyphrase with the largest number of searches is not necessarily the best focus for your company. Some key phrases are harder to get to the top of Google for than others. If the sites you are competing against (the ones which currently sit at the top of Google) are not “well optimised” it will require less effort to compete against them. i.e. if all the sites on the first page for a selected phrase don't have many high quality inbound and relevant links to them then it will be a straightforward case of good SEO in order to get your site listed.

However if the keyword phrase is one that is used the most, it is likely that many more websites have that phrase on their web pages and that many more of your competitors have optimised their sites for it. It will require more high quality inbound and relevant links. With enough time and money Bite Digital can get you to the top for any phrase. If your SEO budget is limited, it may be better to select the 'low hanging fruit' i.e. keyphrase's that are less competitive but still generate enough relevant visitors to your site.

Examples
Example's of the difference between highly competitive and less competitive key phrases:

Travel:
Competitve: 'luxury holidays'
Less competitive: 'luxury honeymoon destinations'

Pet-shops:
Competitve: 'parrot cage'
Less competitive: 'large parrot cage'

What Google says

There is no mystery about Search engine optimisation (SEO), Google has plenty of information that explains how you can improve your sites rankings in its search engine. This is what Google says:

How can I improve my site's ranking?

Sites' positions in our search results are determined based on a number of factors designed to provide end-users with helpful, accurate search results. These factors are explained in more detail at http://www.google.com/technology

In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages. For more information about improving your site's visibility in the Google search results, we recommend reviewing our webmaster guidelines. They outline core concepts for maintaining a Google-friendly website.

What's an SEO? Does Google recommend working with companies that offer to make my site Google-friendly?
SEO is an acronym for "search engine optimization" or "search engine optimizer." Deciding to hire an SEO is a big decision. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site. Many SEOs and other agencies and consultants provide useful services for website owners, including:

  • Reviewing and providing recommendations on your site content or structure
  • Technical advice on website development: for example, hosting, redirects, error pages, use of JavaScript
  • Content development
  • Managing online business development campaigns
  • Keyword research
  • SEO training

Keep in mind that the Google search results page often includes paid advertising and free organic search results. It costs nothing to appear in our organic search results, and advertising with Google won't improve your ranking. Free resources such as Webmaster Tools, the official Webmaster Central blog, and our discussion group can provide you with a great deal of information about how to optimize your site for organic search. Many of these free sources, as well as information on paid search, can be found on Google Webmaster Central.

Before beginning your search for an SEO, it's a great idea to become an educated consumer and get familiar with how search engines work. We recommend starting here:

  • Google Webmaster Guidelines
  • Google 101: How Google crawls, indexes and serves the web.

If you're thinking about hiring an SEO, the earlier the better. A great time to hire is when you're considering a site redesign, or planning to launch a new site. That way, you and your SEO can ensure that your site is designed to be search engine-friendly from the bottom up. However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site.

Some useful questions to ask an SEO include:

  1. Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories?
  2. Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines?
  3. Do you offer any online marketing services to complement your organic search business?
  4. What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe?
  5. What's your experience in my industry?
  6. How long have you been in business?

While SEOs can provide clients with valuable services, some unethical SEOs have given the industry a black eye through their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to manipulate search engine results in unfair ways. Practices that violate our guidelines may result in your site being removed from the Google index.

Here are some things to consider:

  • No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.

Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a "special relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or by submitting a Sitemap and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.

  • Be careful if a company is secretive or won't clearly explain what they intend to do

Ask for explanations if something is unclear. If an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, such as doorway pages or "throwaway" domains, your site could be removed entirely from Google's index. Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire, so it's best to be sure you know exactly how they intend to "help" you.

  • You should never have to link to an SEO

Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of "free-for-all" links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that don't affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines -- at least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive.

  • Be sure to understand where the money goes

While Google never sells better ranking in our search results, several other search engines combine pay-per-click or pay-for-inclusion results with their regular web search results. Some SEOs will promise to rank you highly in search engines, but place you in the advertising section rather than in the search results. A few SEOs will even change their bid prices in real time to create the illusion that they "control" other search engines and can place themselves in the slot of their choice. This scam doesn't work with Google because our advertising is clearly labeled and separated from our search results, but be sure to ask any SEO you're considering which fees go toward permanent inclusion and which apply toward temporary advertising.

  • What are the most common abuses a website owner is likely to encounter?

One common scam is the creation of "shadow" domains that funnel users to a site by using deceptive redirects. These shadow domains often will be owned by the SEO who claims to be working on a client's behalf. However, if the relationship sours, the SEO may point the domain to a different site, or even to a competitor's domain. If that happens, the client has paid to develop a competing site owned entirely by the SEO.

Another illicit practice is to place "doorway" pages loaded with keywords on the client's site somewhere. The SEO promises this will make the page more relevant for more queries. This is inherently false since individual pages are rarely relevant for a wide range of keywords. More insidious, however, is that these doorway pages often contain hidden links to the SEO's other clients as well. Such doorway pages drain away the link popularity of a site and route it to the SEO and its other clients, which may include sites with unsavory or illegal content.

What are some other things to look out for?

There are a few warning signs that you may be dealing with a rogue SEO. It's far from a comprehensive list, so if you have any doubts, you should trust your instincts. By all means, feel free to walk away if the SEO:

  • owns shadow domains
  • puts links to their other clients on doorway pages
  • offers to sell keywords in the address bar
  • doesn't distinguish between actual search results and ads that appear in search results
  • guarantees ranking, but only on obscure, long keyword phrases you would get anyway
  • operates with multiple aliases or falsified WHOIS info
  • gets traffic from "fake" search engines, spyware, or scumware
  • has had domains removed from Google's index or is not itself listed in Google
